The parasite's eggs develop inside the snail and eventually need to be released to complete their life cycle. As the flatworm matures, the infected snail's eyestalks become swollen and pulsate with vibrant colors, mimicking the appearance of caterpillars or worms. This manipulation makes the snail more noticeable and attractive to birds - the final host of the flatworm.
