The Chariot / Flea (Pulex irritans)
The Chariot card epitomizes triumph, willpower, and control. With remarkable physical capabilities, fleas inhabit the power of adaptation and resourcefulness in overcoming barriers. Just as the charioteer navigates through diverse terrains, fleas, by hitching rides on different hosts, explore every shore, testament to their determination. The bodies of fleas are laterally flattened, akin to fish, which helps them to 'swim’ through the fur and feathers of their vehicles.
Parasites play pivotal roles in ecosystems. They help control wildlife populations by regulating host numbers and preventing overpopulation and its detrimental effects on the environment. In this sense, they act as stewards of ecological balance. Additionally, they are essential for keeping energy flowing through food chains. By feeding on hosts and, in turn, being consumed by predators or parasitoids, they facilitate the transfer of energy and nutrients, ensuring the sustenance of various species within the ecosystem.
The Chariot/The Flea encourages our power of focus, determination, and tenacity. They teach us the significance of adapting to change, maintaining balance and control in our own journeys, and persisting in the face of challenges. Fortune graces the humble webspinner with the means to establish sanctuary in hostile environments. Their silken galleries are crafted with threads as fine as gossamer from a gland in their front feet, defying vulnerability with their ingenuity. This silken treasure, the thinnest silk known to any creature, signifies nature's elegant finesse in crafting beauty from simplicity.
The magic of the webspinner's silk doesn't end there. Upon encountering water, the proteins within these filaments undergo a remarkable metamorphosis, transforming the silk into a waterproof marvel. Just as the wheel turns, life takes its course, and the webspinner embraces each turn with quiet poise. They, like the wheel, whisper a truth: change is inevitable, cycles are inescapable, and destiny unfolds in its own time.

The Justice card symbolizes the need to weigh actions and decisions carefully to ensure that fairness prevails. These concepts find a fitting parallel in the world of the hornet, an insect known for their potent sting. They generally follow a policy of non-aggression unless provoked and this is mirrored in the card's message of evaluating situations objectively and responding with an appropriate level of force only when necessary.
Just as the Justice card encourages us to uphold a sense of balance in our actions, hornets contribute to ecosystem equilibrium by pollinating plants and controlling insect populations. This card encourages impartiality and the ability to judge without bias. Similarly, hornets act based on instinct and not malice, defending themselves without preconceived notions. This serves as a reminder that justice is rooted in objective assessment without personal emotions clouding judgment.
By carefully considering our actions, weighing their consequences, and responding appropriately to different situations, we can embody the principles of justice and contribute to a balanced existence, much like the role of the hornet in nature.

The Hanged Man / Dobsonfly (Corydalinae sp.)
The Hanged Man deals in the idea of willingly letting go of old patterns or viewpoints. It implies a transformative process and a willingness to see the world from an unconventional angle so that we may uncover hidden truths and gain insights that were previously elusive.
As larvae, dobsonflies are voracious underwater predators. As adults the males possess exaggerated mandibles. While unfit for capturing prey they are instead used in combat with other males. This can be seen as an echo of the message of letting go and sacrificing for a greater purpose. The fact that adults still have powerful jaws yet are not predatory and do not consume food aligns with the theme of surrendering one's conventional urges for a higher purpose and is reminiscent of the call for a shift in perspective and values.
Additionally, the dobsonfly larvae's intolerance to pollution means their presence indicates healthy streams. Likewise this card bids us to release toxic influences from our lives to promote well-being. Above all we are urged to release attachments and see the world from a fresh vantage point.

Death / Green-banded broodsac (Leucochloridium passeri)
Death is one of the most feared and misunderstood cards in tarot. However, the real meaning is one of the most positive in the whole deck. It symbolizes the end of a cycle or a transformation; a profound and inevitable change typically accompanied by the removal of the old to make way for the new. This card doesn't necessarily represent literal death but rather the termination of something, leading to rebirth and renewal.
The green-banded broodsac is a parasitic flatworm that infects snails and alters their behavior in a metamorphic way. The parasite's eggs develop inside the snail and eventually need to be released to complete their life cycle. As the flatworm matures, the infected snail's eyestalks become swollen and pulsate with vibrant colors, mimicking the appearance of caterpillars or worms. This manipulation makes the snail more noticeable and attractive to birds - the final host of the flatworm.
Even though it involves a seemingly destructive transformation in order to grow and evolve, we must be willing to release old habits, thoughts, or situations that no longer serve us. Change is the one constant, a truth that when embraced liberates us to navigate life's challenges more effectively. This card encourages us to confront our fears and misconceptions about change even when it might seem unsettling.

XV. The Devil / Anthropogenic Environmental Degradation
The Devil is the shadow of human nature. It serves as a cautionary reminder of the dangers of unchecked human ambition. The Devil's influence is akin to the allure of exploiting resources and manipulating ecosystems for short-term gains. It symbolizes the bondage of reliance on destructive chemicals and the potential for negative forces to manipulate and deceive.
The card's imagery highlights the consequences of environmental degradation, the loss of biodiversity, and the poisoning of ecosystems. All of this leads to the erradication of beneficial insects and soil microorganisms, throwing the natural balance out of order. We are prompted to consider the true cost of our actions and the choices we make in pursuit of convenience or fleeting pleasure.
The presence of The Devil summons our attention to the patterns that keep us trapped in detrimental behaviors and the chains that bind us—whether they are societal expectations, material obsessions, or destructive behaviors. In doing so, we confront our fears and limitations and break free from self-imposed constraints. Just as it challenges us to question our desire to control, the ecological impact of pesticides and pollution reminds us that the illusion of dominion over nature can lead to dire consequences. By heeding these lessons we can move towards a more conscious and sustainable existence for ourselves and the world around us, confronting our personal demons and striving for true freedom.

This card is a powerful metaphor for the unforeseen disruptions that reshape our lives. It describes a period of chaos and devastation that paves the way for new beginnings and acceptance.
Often seen as destructive pests, termites are in reality essential decomposers. They break down tough plant fibers and contribute to nutrient recycling in ecosystems. Just as the termites break down wood to create fertile soil, the tower encourages us to let go of what no longer serves us, clearing the way for new opportunities and personal evolution.
The Macrotermes mounds despite their impressive construction, eventually succumb to forces beyond their control. Just as the termites must adapt to the collapse of their mounds, we too are challenged to rise to meet unexpected upheavals with resilience and grace. By anticipating the inevitability of The Tower as it occurs along our paths we hope to become attuned to the signs of instability, enabling us to take preemptive measures to avert disaster or adapt to sudden shifts.
